A Good Girl (2018) |
A Good Girl is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Ralph.
It was released on September 28, 2018 by 604 Records. The album was promoted through five singles, "September Fades", "Girl Next Door", "Tables Have Turned", "Weather" and "Long Distance Lover". It features collaborations with Canadian rapper TOBi and Canadian electropop duo Milk & Bone.
Background and release
After the release of her self-titled EP, Ralph travelled to Europe and Los Angeles, where she worked with a few different producers. At her home in Toronto, she also kept working with previous collaborator Mike Wise, who produced Ralph, and Nathan Ferraro. Ralph wrote the album in the course of a year and used her personal experiences as inspiration for the songs. She refers to the album as a "mature version" of the EP.
On August 22, 2018, Ralph announced her debut album was coming out on later September along with dates for a supportive tour for the album across Canada and the United States. A Good Girl was finally released on September 28, 2018 through digital retailers. It received a physical release on October 5, 2018.
Composition
During an interview for Canadian magazine Exclaim!, Ralph revealed that the songs on the album are about relationships, to which she called a "personal cliché". Despite the general theme, Ralph explained she wanted to expand her lyrical horizons and explore all types of relationships on the album. According to her, "it's about exploring the moments that you've been hurtful as well".
Musically, A Good Girl is a synth-pop album with hints of R&B and dance music.
